the delayed BlackBerry 5G phone is dead, OnwardMobility confirmed on its website.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of OnwardMobility, and we will no longer pursue the development of an ultra-secure smartphone with a physical keyboard," OnwardMobility said in a post Friday, as spotted earlier by CrackBerry. "

Please know that this was not a decision we made lightly or in haste. We share your disappointment with this news and assure you that this is not the outcome we have been working for and hoping for."

Android Police and CrackBerry initially reported that the phone had been canceled on Feb. 11, claiming that OnwardMobility, a Texas-based startup looking to revitalize the iconic brand via a next-generation Android-based Wi-Fi device, had lost BlackBerry Ltd.'s license . to use the BlackBerry brand name.

OnwardMobility did not explain why it is stopping and canceling production of the phone.

The news comes after BlackBerry ended service for its older devices in early January and OnwardMobility promised an update on the phone in a blog post last month titled: "Contrary to popular belief, we are not dead."

Before OnwardMobility got the license, Chinese manufacturer TCL was the newest BlackBerry-branded phone maker. It launched the BlackBerry KeyTwo in 2018, along with other Android-powered devices. However, TCL has since launched its own mid-range phones.

BlackBerry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
